This is a very beautiful; totally one of a kind piece. A french folk art mirror, hand whittled and and then bound to make this superb delight.
Often called Tramp Art; these pieces are often made from found items which makes it a lovely sustainable piece as an added bonus. The handle shape at the top is just gorgeous. Imagine the makers joy when they spied what nature had perfectly grown for use here!
Really hard to age it but the twine has its own patina and it has been aged by the light - I'd guess at least 50 years old and probably older. It has bark panels to form the rectangles around the mirror. Solidly constructed, but rustic as you would expect.
There is a little glue showing on the bottom of the mirror in two very small areas but a gentle clean with solvent remover would likely remove it. I didn't notice it for ages and would just live with it quite happily. (see final two pics)
I have had a huge struggle whether to sell or to keep ~ which is still ongoing to be honest, so don't be surprised if it quietly vanishes. Be quick before I lose my nerve.
